Spring flower put a bounce in your step

HippeastrumSpringtime is right around the corner and, frankly, I don’t think I could be more excited. First off, my birthday’s in spring (September 18, put it in your calendar people) and I am one of those people who loves their birthday. I can’t help it, I’m a selfish human and I like getting presents. Sue me. Secondly, the beginning of spring means that winter is finally over. I really hate the cold and the cold rain, and with spring comes not only warmer weather but daylight savings, longer days in general, and a more relaxed feel than depressing old winter. Thirdly, I’m a classic green-thumb. I have a neatly arranged veggie box outside where I grow my own food (it’s the way of the future, get on it guys), but more than just growing yummy organic fruit and veggies, I love flowers. They’re so pretty, how can you not? So for me, the coming of the spring means it’s time to work out what I’m going to plant this year.

My favourite colour is definitely yellow (I don’t know why, it has been ever since I was a kid) and so I try to keep a vibrant yellow flower in my garden all year around. The winter aconites are just finishing off their season about now, and I feel it’s really time to make a new addition to my garden. So, I was thinking about picking up some hippeastrums over the next few weeks.  Of course, I’m not going to wait until halfway through their season to buy some maturing plants, rather, I was thinking about just grabbing some Summer bulbs. I simply adore calla lillies, they are a must have for Summer. Watching a bulb spring to life (haha, geddit?) brings a sense of pride and achievement that makes the longer wait worthwhile while helping to brighten up my garden.
